Garage door problems: what each symptom usually means
Almost every call we take starts with somebody describing a noise or a movement, not a part. So this is the list written in those words. Find what your door is doing, read the short answer, and either sort it out in a minute or know what to say when you ring.

A car is trapped
Say that when you ring, because it changes the order of the day. Do not pull the red release cord unless the door is fully closed. Pulled part way up, it hands you a door that may not be counterbalanced.
The door is stuck open
That is a hole in the side of your house, and it is the call we prioritise hardest. If a spring is broken, do not pull the door down by hand. It will come down at its full weight.
There is a gap in the spring
Look at the spring on the bar above the door. A visible gap in the coil means the counterbalance is gone. Do not lift the door, do not run the opener, and do not park under it.

Why does my garage door opener hum but the door will not lift?
Stop and call Usually a broken spring.
The opener does not lift the door. The springs do, and the motor only guides a load they are already carrying. So when a spring lets go, the opener is suddenly asked to lift the whole door on its own, and it stalls, hums, or trips out on its force limit.
Go and look at the shaft above the door. A torsion spring that has failed shows a clear gap of an inch or two in the coil, and it is unmistakable once you know to look for it. Stop pressing the button, and do not try to lift the door by hand.
The repair itself is not a homeowner job and the trade body says so plainly: spring replacement "should only be performed by a trained door systems technician."

Why is my garage door not responding to anything at all?
Check this first Usually power, a lock, or the remote rather than the door.
Three checks before anything else. Is the opener still plugged in and is the breaker on. Is there a manual slide bolt or lock thrown on the track, which happens more often than people expect after a trip away. And does the wall button do the same thing as the remote.
That last one splits the problem in half. If the wall button works and the remote does not, it is a remote or receiver problem and the door is fine. If nothing responds and the opener light will not come on either, the power or the logic board is the place to look.

Why does my garage door open a few inches and stop?
Stop and call Something is binding, and the force setting is hiding it.
An opener has a force limit so that it gives up rather than tearing a door apart. When it stops short, it is usually telling you the truth: a roller has seized, the track has moved, a cable has slack in it, or the door is out of balance and heavier than the motor was set for.
Turning the force up to push through it is the most expensive mistake on this page. It takes a bent bracket and turns it into a bent door, and it defeats the protection that was doing its job.

Why does my garage door start closing and then go back up?
Check this first Usually the safety sensors, and usually something in the beam.
The two small eyes near the floor stop the door closing on anything in the way, and they are deliberately easy to interrupt. Start with what is actually there: a bin, a bike wheel, a coiled hose, a shovel leaning by the door. Things you have stopped noticing are the commonest cause by a distance.
Then wipe both lenses and check that nothing has knocked a bracket out of line. Frost or condensation on a lens is a January speciality on this lakeshore, and so is low winter sun washing out the receiver in the late afternoon.

What does a blinking light on a garage door sensor mean?
Check this first The sensors are out of line or one has lost power.
Most sensor pairs carry one LED each. Two steady lights means aligned and clear, so the sensors are not your problem. A flickering or dark light on the receiver means the beam is broken or misaligned. One unit completely dark means that side has lost power, usually a pinched or corroded wire.
Whatever you do, do not bridge the terminals or tape over the eyes to make the door close. The beam is set no higher than six inches above the floor precisely so that it catches a small child lying down, and a bypassed sensor leaves the door looking completely normal with the protection gone.

Why is there a gap under my garage door when it is shut?
Book it in The seal, the travel limit, or a slab that is not level.
Three different faults look identical from the driveway. A bottom seal that has gone hard no longer fills the gap it was cut for. A down travel limit set slightly high stops the door before it lands. And a settled slab leaves a wedge of daylight the door was never going to close, because the door is straight and the floor is not.
The first two are quick. The third is a conversation about managing water rather than closing a gap, and it is worth having honestly before anybody sells you a thicker seal.

What was the loud bang, and why will my garage door not move?
Stop and call Almost always a spring.
A torsion spring letting go is genuinely loud. People describe it as something heavy falling over, or a gunshot, and it is often heard from inside the house. Afterwards the door is extremely heavy and it may sit crooked in the opening. Leave it exactly where it is, and if the car is inside, say so when you ring.
If the bang was an impact rather than a break, something backing into the door for instance, there is a published homeowner procedure for checking a sectional door for damage. It is worth following as written, including the part where it tells you to stop: if a problem is found, the inspection stops there and a trained technician is called rather than the door being worked on.

Why is my garage door crooked, with one side higher than the other?
Stop and call Usually a cable off its drum, or a snapped one.
Two steel lift cables carry the weight of the door up each side. When one comes off its drum or breaks, that side stops rising, the other side keeps going, and the door racks in the opening. What you are looking at is a door being held up by one side.
Running the opener on it drags the door further out of the tracks with every press, so unplug the opener if anyone else in the house might try. This is not a door to operate at all until it has been looked at.

Why does my garage door grind, squeal or bang on the way up?
Book it in Rollers, hinges or track alignment.
Noise is the cheapest warning a garage door gives you, and the one most often ignored until it becomes a repair. Plastic and worn steel rollers eventually stop rolling and start dragging. Hinges fatigue where they are fastened, especially on older steel doors. Track fasteners work loose in the jamb over years of vibration until a roller finds the gap.
One thing not to do in the meantime: do not spray the track. The rollers ride in it, and grease in a track collects grit and makes the wear faster, not slower.

Why is my garage door suddenly so heavy to lift by hand?
Stop and call The counterbalance is out.
A correctly balanced door should stay roughly where you leave it at about waist height, and a person should be able to move it without straining. If it slams to the floor when you let go, or fights you the whole way up, the springs are no longer carrying the door and everything downstream of them is being overworked.
Do not keep operating it, by hand or with the opener. If you do have to move it, there is a published procedure for manual operation, and it includes the detail people get wrong most often: the joint between two sections is not a handhold. That gap closes as the door moves, and it is how people lose fingertips. A residential sectional door is required to have proper handles or gripping points for exactly this reason.

Why does my garage door remote only work close to the door?
Check this first Usually the remote battery, then interference.
A failing remote battery loses range before it stops working altogether, so a remote that only fires from ten feet away is nearly always a battery rather than a receiver. Change it before anything else, and change it in every remote in the house rather than testing one at a time.
If new batteries do not fix it, the next suspect is interference, and the commonest culprit sits inside the opener itself. Cheap LED bulbs broadcast noise across the frequencies the receiver is listening on, and swapping the bulb for one sold as garage door opener rated fixes a surprising number of these.

Why has my garage door keypad stopped working?
Check this first Usually the battery, or a code the opener has forgotten.
An outdoor keypad spends an Ontario winter on one battery, and it gets unreliable in the cold well before it stops entirely. Change the battery first, and check the seal on the cover while it is open, because water getting into the housing is the other half of this failure.
If the keypad lights up and the door still does not respond, the code has usually been lost, which happens after a power event or when somebody has pressed the learn button on the opener. Re-learning it takes a minute at the opener itself, and the sequence differs by brand, so it is worth having the model number to hand.

Why is my garage door opener beeping?
Check this first Usually the battery backup, not the door.
An opener fitted with a battery backup beeps to say the battery is low or has reached the end of its service life, which is typically a few years. That is the unit doing its job, not a fault in the door, and the door will usually keep working normally on mains power in the meantime.
The beep pattern is how the opener tells you which condition it is reporting, and it differs by manufacturer, so the manual for your model is the place to check rather than a general answer. If your opener has never beeped before and has no backup battery fitted, then something else has changed and it is worth a look.

Why is water coming in under my garage door?
Book it in Often the slab, not the seal.
Worth knowing before anybody sells you a thicker seal. The industry body states plainly that a sectional garage door is not a watertight barrier and should not be expected to keep out all water. A bottom seal closes a gap. It cannot hold back water that is running downhill toward the opening.
So the honest order of investigation is the ground first and the rubber second. Where a driveway slopes in, or the slab has settled toward the door, the answer is drainage and grading, and a new seal only buys a little time. Where the seal has genuinely gone hard or torn, replacing it is quick and it does help.

Why is my garage door frozen to the floor, and how do I free it?
Check this first Free the seal before you touch the button.
Meltwater runs under the seal during the day, freezes to the slab overnight, and by morning the rubber is stuck to the concrete. The door is fine. The bond is the problem.
Running the opener on a frozen door is what turns this into a repair, because the opener cannot tell the difference between ice and an obstruction. It either tears the seal off the bottom section or pulls the door out of alignment trying. Free the seal first with warm water or a careful edge along the joint, dry what you can, then run it.

What we will ask you on the phone
Five questions, and the answers usually tell us what needs to be on the truck before we leave Grimsby. It is worth having a look at the door while you ring.
- Is a car trapped inside, and do you need it today? This changes the order of the day more than anything else on the list.
- Is the door open, closed, or stuck part way? A door stuck open is a security problem and goes first.
- Is there a gap in the spring on the bar above the door? If yes, that is the job, and the parts come with us.
- Does the wall button do the same thing as the remote? This tells us in one answer whether we are looking at the door or the electronics.
- Roughly how old is the door, and has anything hit it? It decides whether we are talking about a repair or a section.
What this page is not
It is a triage list, not a repair manual. There is a reason five of the fifteen answers above say stop and call rather than telling you what to undo.
Anything carrying the counterbalance is out of bounds for a homeowner, and that means the springs, the cables, the drums and the bottom brackets they are fastened to. Those parts hold the weight of a door that is the heaviest moving thing in most houses, and they hold it whether the door is up or down. Everything else on this page that we have marked as safe to check genuinely is safe to check, and if it turns out to be one of those, you have saved yourself a call-out.
